What happened to Shin A Lam at fencing

I am watching with interest the London 2012 Olympics .

Today  a peculiar and controversy thing happened during the Women's fencing individual epee semi-finals. South Korea's A Lam Shin faced Britta Heidemann from Germany. The game was OK until it went to overtime during which Shin A Lam was attacked four times in just 1 second until she lost the final touch. How could such a thing happen? Well the countdown was stopped at 0:01 and the referee continued to call the contestants until  Heidemann scoured a touch on Shin.

The Korean coach noticed the judges about the timeline.

After 30 minutes of discussions and debates the judges decided in favor of the German competitor leaving Shin A Lam dumbfounded in the arena. Her coach appealed the decision but the judges maintained their initial collusion.

Was the judges decision fair? How can a referee take away years of hard work by "forgetting" to start the clock in a competition which is supposed to be at the highest level?
Why haven't they decided to replay that second?

Currently Shin A Lam is fighting for the bronze medal. Go go go!!!

  1. Absolutely makes no sense at all unfair and biased judgement. Shin a lam should have won the match. The regulation is that the referee should not be of the same nation with the player but for this match both heidemann and the referee was german. and there were clearly technical problems. How can 4 moves fit in 1 second. This match will be remembered as one of the most disgraceful match. Honestly, London 2012 is very disappointing so far in all perspectives.
